I've made a fair amount of money playing progressive penny slots (slots in general) when the progressive is over cost. Your emphatic statement of "ever", is misplaced. 99.9% I'll give you, but there are times when the edge on even penny slots is tremendous. Of course you have to do the math and calculate the return before you play.

I should have said, "Before you play seriously" some light play is often needed to walk the machine, as I'm sure you know.

I have seen this stated elsewhere "Of course you have to do the math and calculate the return before you play", but I never seen where this math is available and/or how you are suppose to calculate it. Could you provide an example.

Well I was referring to combinational permutational maths, generally included as a subset of statistics in schools these days. I go into a lot of the math in my book. Any good math book on probability should get you there.

An example of the type of maths would be this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_theorem

And here's an example of how we did it in the old days:

Take a pad and pencil and "walk the reels" of a mechanical slot machine. That's play enough to write down the number and disposition of all the stops on each of the reels. Then you go home and do some simple (REALLY SIMPLE FOR SLOTS) multiplication and calculate the Jackpot frequency and cost to hit it, and then simply wait for the JP to exceed the cost.

A 22 stop 3 reel slot with 1 "7" on each reel would take (on average) 10,648 pulls to hit (22x22x22=10648). If the hold was 10% and it was a 3 coin dollar you'd expect to lose about $3200 to hit the JP. We played ones just like this, but only when the Jackpot got over $5,000...

I have found that all penney slots are not created equal.
For example the old aristocrat machines(buffalo, miss kitty, timberwolves, 100 lions, shamans magic, mine mine mine, where the gold, meteors, pompeii) have a better payout than the machines with all the bells and whistles.(batman, wizard of oz, family guy, star trek, ghost busters, sex in the city).
I have no hard data, just what I have personally observed.
I have had 2k hand payouts from aristocrat machines(not the new age ones) but nothing more than 50 dollars from the hi tech ones i mentioned.
Also old machines non aristocrat, like jackpot party, lucky lemmings......virtually impossible to win more than 100 dollars on a bonus let alone 2k.

I play in and around reno. Most success at Atlantis.

I have a question for those who might have a guess. When you get free spin bonus on aristocrat.....is it like watching a movie(predetermined) or is the rng in play. I have a strong suspicion a bonus turns into a pre programed "movie". Any comments?

When I look at penny slots and the number of players versus the payout and all it makes me want to play in Nevada penny slots. The payout amount I on an upward trend and the percentage of the wins too! So what I happening with that in Indiana or Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Missouri and Michigan? That's what I want to know.

Nevada slot payouts are governed by law. Here is a list of the Payouts by State

Thanks for this information. Now how can this URL be cataloged so others who need the data can access it to be informed of what is happening in the state where an individual gambles.

There is nothing that can help players that play 91% return games. Telling them this information about the VLT's, that are in every bar and Dotties/Richards and all those Micro Casinos at Denny's and Shari's,IS POINTLESS - They still play.

That article appears to be pretty dated. Unless I'm missing something, the information on NY Stare is years out of date.

Interesting video, thanks. I get what he's saying, but to me it almost seems like the penny slots are where most of the more fun/entertaining games are lately.

Since I only play occasionally and strictly for fun, I feel like I get most of my value from the entertainment aspect of playing slots while socializing and having a few free drinks.

I typically play until my allocated budget is gone, and I do feel like the money isn't lasting as long as it used to. But I don't know that I'd want to go up in denomination if it wasn't going to mean a significant increase in my play time. I think I'd rather have my $50 last for an hour versus having $100 last for an hour & 15 minutes. Those extra 15 minutes don't seem to be worth the extra $50.

Maybe there is a middle ground somewhere.

That's interesting. I have played penny slots before and I was able to get a pretty good return from it, but that's pretty interesting. I don't know if I will play them again though.

Mimi33, that's fine, so long as you have the discipline to stop once a reasonable (for you) gambling loss limit has been reached.

The problem is that slots are addictive, leading many people to risk money they should not be risking.
