You’ve most likely never been in a position to give or loan money, but when people do... there is part of them that believes in the goodness of those people they are giving or loaning to. If I give my sister or a close friend money because they need it, I almost always preface it with “you don’t have to pay me back.” I do this for multiple reasons, mostly keeping the peace. Blood is thicker than water or whatever. And when it’s a relatively small amount, it’s not worth the hassle of signing contracts or making legal issues out of it. But they do pay me back, because that’s a reflection of their character.

With that said, the money he gave you wasn’t a gift. It was an investment on his part. You are correct, you are not legally obligated to pay him back, you fucked him over fair and square. Revel in that glory. It has its pros and cons. You don’t have to give him anything, also, you burned your bridge, and morally you are defunct. Even when one does know, it doesn’t mean that this knowledge will overcome it, but at the very least, it’s a tool in their box and can help manage certain things.

In your particular case, the one tool you’ve managed to pull out of the box is your ability to recognize that you will never get rich off of your scheme. You justify it by thinking others will and that it will change the world, that’s fine and dandy in your imagination land, but the real rainbow here is that at least that tool, the tool of excuses, has put you into acceptance that you will never achieve the lifelong goals that you once had.
