and with all that going on, someone is pondering the appropriateness of adding an underline to a quote.

My degree is in English: writing option. I started in journalism and switched.

Unlike some people, I tend to stick to arguing about things I know, not things I have an opinion about. So when someone does something wrong that I know is wrong, I point it out.

I am no expert on the propriety of cottonpatch niggers, loving or hating Jews, or incest. I don't have a degree and experience in any of those things, and I defer to those on this site who do.

 

Your rules should prohibit that. If you can't, then you run the risk of people being able to freely misquote whoever they want whenever they want while you wash your hands of the accuracy of what is being written. Very poor.

Why should anyone post if other people can change the content of what they've written? That's ridiculous.

 

It changes the meaning in the same way that modulating a videotaped speech by amping up the decibels of certain words or inserting hand gestures would change the meaning and emphasis of the speech.
