I have observed and I might be off base...but I will put this out there....that Tahoe machines are tighter than reno machines overall....because reno caters to alot of locals....and Tahoe caters to almost all tourists. The tourists are worried about skiing, boating and hiking, partying in Tahoe and dont really care if the casino sucks their money dry. As long as the drinks keep coming and the party atmosphere continues.

Reno doesnt have touristy attractions. Just gambling. So I find the locals are a big part of the casinos.
They want local repeat business and give locals a better shot then the tahoe counterparts at slots.

I have no real evidence..just observational from experience

Does anyone think this is valid...and if so...what are examples of what may be considered "local" vegas casinos.
For example I have noticed that the Orleans has many poker tables going, and alot of local people there....a tougher crowd to beat...than the tourists you might find at the bigger casinos.

Any "local" vegas casinos for slots?

Or is this whole local clientelle vs tourists just total garbage.

The American Casino Guide site summarizes the reported numbers, updated June 2015.

Reno/Sparks is definitely superior, with penny slot paybacks of about 93%.

South Tahoe is 89%, slightly better than the 88% Vegas Strip.

The problem with identifying locals casinos is, the groupings aren't very specific. Boulder Strip is >90%, as is North Las Vegas.

Casinos with good video poker are probably more likely to offer good slots, but that's a complex assessment. For maximum value, you need to consider promotions. Boyd casinos (Gold Coast/Orleans/Sam's Town/Suncoast) occasionally offer 11x multipliers. Fiesta and Stations offer 10x. And Palms has multipliers and giveaways that can add over 2%.

Because locals tend to be sharper players, live poker may be easier at the tourist casinos, but I would guess that the locals poker rooms offer more aggressive promotions.

Even in Reno/ Sparks I think you will see large swings in numbers from property to properly. Just speculation but I would assume Harrahs is tighter than CalNeva across the street. Same thing with the larger resorts being tighter than say Baldini's.

I find it true about Harrahs,
Lest true with Atlantis....a larger newer hotel.

I have seen alot of hand payouts (including myself) at atlantis. But not so much at others.

    Harrahs is horrid.

How is the place that opened in Sparks in the old Silver City? Used to drink a lot of GB Icky down the street and play some at The JA Nugget. I believe I read a while back someone was reopening it.

I havent walked out of the Nugget to see.....
The nugget used to be my fave casino. I would play poker there every saturday.....and bet some sports and horses downstairs.
But it really went downhill under the old management(family owned)....and taken over and modernized.....but not the same.

I have been at the nugget maybe 3 times in the last year.

I play poker at peppermill, and buy sports from william hill, and do slots at atlantis, rail city, boomtown

When it comes to machine play, would it be accurate to state that in Las Vegas, "tourists play slots, locals play VP?"

    I cant speak for LV
But in reno, locals will play slots.
So may poker machines are empty....while regular faces fill the slots.
Not scientific...but just my obsrvation of almost 20 years

    Interesting.

Somehow I'd heard that, at least in Las Vegas, die-hard machine players seem to gravitate to VP as opposed to traditional slots.

It could be a "man thing," with women still favoring slots.

I think die hard VP players, local or non local will go to vegas..and therefore you might see more people at the VP machines there.

I have seen over the last 20 years in reno, VP machines being replaced by slots. People are looking for fun...even the locals. And sitting in front of a machine that just deals cards for hours is not fun.
The regular video slot machines, are even being replaced by bigger flashier 8 foot tall machines that is eye catching and can be viewed easily by passers-by to gain their interest. Some of the machines are movie and TV show based, and some are generic categories like jungle animals, or knights in shinning armor, or standards like Buffalo.
There are definatley less and less VP machines.

I guess with these 8-9 foot tall machines, its the same concept as Trump Towers and the like....it doesnt cost any more money in property to build UP...and the air has no cost. Well t he same for the casinos....If the machine is the same width, why not build upward to garner more attraction by the player and by people walking by. That part of the casino(the air above the standard slot machine) was not being used.
