And learning to calculate an edge irrespective of a tally of results, while a kind of golden rule, has its limits. If you calculate your edge, and what occurs is nowhere near what you calculated then it may be that (A) your math is inappropriate or (B) your perspective is inappropriate. Or possibly both. Sometimes casinos and/or other players cheat. I know, kind of like that line from Casablanca, "You are shocked, shocked to learn that cheating is going on in this casino."

Your post caught my attention because my personal decades-old rule of thumb for football is that 30% of the time when you are "right" about how teams will interact, you will still lose. Seems to be that (ballpark), you win 70% of the college football games you deserve to win and win 30% or so of the games you deserve to lose.
