Tip one should be: Play only in a well-regulated venue. Playing anywhere else is pure gambling.

Why would anyone pay any attention to someone who writes things like this? Video poker has been my business since 1994. I've written three books on it, published a hard copy newsletter, Video Poker Times, for 14 years, and developed the only video poker software that actually trains the player to recognize the hand types in a chart that is displayed next to the game window in for format of your choice.

Rona tells us that the only way the casino can change a video poker game's payback is to change the paytable. Unfortunately, that's true only in well-regulated venues such as Nevada, Louisiana and New Jersey.

For example, New York has machines that look like video poker but are actually lottery terminals; the payback can not be calculated from the paytable because the cards do not have equal probability. The odds of a royal flush on an honest machine is about one in 40,000 to 45,000, depending on your playing strategy, but the odds against a royal are extreme on a lottery machine.

From reports I've received, most VP machines in Indian casinos are honest, but there have been reports of dishonest games. Similar for cruise ships. But don't forget that web site video poker games are just software on a server computer, so they can be programmed any way the "casino" likes.
