literally every day on the web someone "discovers" the Martingale - or some version of it - and believes it is the Holy Grail

the Martingale is several hundred years old.

Jean Le Rond d'Alembert did not propose a gambling system, but the Alembert, which is a gambling system that is a version of the Martingale is named after him. he made a fallacious argument regarding the likelihood of coin flips coming which was exposed by other mathematicians as being false and although he was a brilliant man with many accomplishments his legacy was greatly harmed by this. His fallacious argument appeared in the scholarly journal entitled "Croix ou Pile" around 1755.

The great author Alexander Dumas ("The Three Musketeers") wrote this in 1849:

"An old man, who had spent his life looking
for a winning formula (martingale), spent
the last days of his life putting it into practice,
and his last pennies to see it fail. The
martingale is as elusive as the soul."

The Martingale just will not die
