Hi question! so I was rolling for 20+ min and I like to take my time a lil bit and set the dice how i like and get my grip set before I throw however I was informed that if I took that long again that I would lose the dice. The boxman called this an “8 second rule” has anyone ever heard of anything like this or are they just trying to get into my head Because of a long and good roll? Anytime I see someone else throwing they always have a routine so I’m not sure. Thanks

 

My first question is which casino? Then, depending the answer, which boxman? You will find that different casinos and different box people within those casinos have different tolerance levels for the amount of time it takes a player to set and toss the dice. My next question is why the heck is it taking you that long to set and toss the dice? If you practice this at home regularly it should take you less than three to five seconds to set grip and toss the dice. I'm telling you this from the point of view from someone who has been doing this for over 20 years. It's not that complicated.

There are no rules in the game that say you have to set and toss the dice and any particular length of time. However, you're in their house playing their game and they can choose to let you toss the dice or not toss the dice if they wish. Casinos have the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason they choose. They don't play by the same rules as the rest of the businesses out there. It is what it is.

There are ways to diffuse the situation somewhat, while aggravating the box man at the same time. If you want to do this, next time the box man says something about you needing to speed up the pace just set the dice back down stand up and look at him and apologize. Then ask if you're doing something wrong. And then he will take the time to explain that you need to set the dice quicker and throw them faster than you are because it's slowing the game down. Then apologize again, and say you didn't realize you were taking too long or that there was a rule that said you had to toss the dice in a specific amount of time. Then explain that this is the first time you've ever heard of that rule. Don't raise your voice Don't get excited Don't get angry. You could always turn your bets off and rinse and repeat this process over and over and over until the guy passes the dice to someone else or he shuts up and let you get back in your routine. If nothing else it's cheap entertainment.

But the ultimate solution to this entire situation is to learn how to set the dice quickly and toss them down the table in 3 seconds.

 

Heavy said it well, but I personally have never heard that. And some of these oldies will hold the dice for what seems like an eternity, applying every crazy superstition possible to them before throwing.

What unit size were you playing, because I could see them doing it to a $5 or $10 player, but never to a guy with blacks or above on the table.

 

For me, it's More likely to happen when I get more action on the table. For example, if I start with 110 inside or 96 across and have my bets pressed up to the point that I have over six to $800 on the table, I may find myself getting heat. Then again, there are days when I may see my bets up in the five to $6,000 range and the suits just stand around the table smile and nod, because I'm poking heavily when that happens. Again it all depends on the casino and their tolerance level as far as losses are concerned. Some casinos have a very low tolerance level when it comes to large winners. That's why I asked which casino and which box person. For example, most Caesar's casinos don't sweat the money. However there are a couple of floor people and box people and Caesar's properties in Vegas who get very nervous when you get large action on the table and are setting the dice. These guys will come over and try to interject themselves into the game every time. They will start telling you to set the dice faster, they will tell you that both dice did not hit the back wall even though they did. And generally give you a hard time on every toss. It's simply a sweat technique they use to try and rattle the shooter. It's b******* but it is what it is.

 

Appreciate it and soaring eagle casino in mount pleasant Michigan. just curious if it was a specific rule or not pretty new player here little under a year. just trying to find my roll still. to answer the other comments I had about $168 spread across the table i was not making $5 bets nor was I taking an eternity just about 5-10 seconds. I’ve seen people that same night take an entire minute. I will admit other boxmen were more lenient with it but that specific one hadn’t said it to anyone else taking longer than “8 seconds”

 

I once was one of Heavy's students and I did run into this once maybe twice or more.

Two solutions. Confront the dealer/box and ask on what page those rules appear in their filing with the Gaming Commission. And believe me in MS I had the GC on my speed dial (Tunica as well as Biloxi) and showed the number to many a suit in case they thought I was a bluff. Plus I have visited the local Gaming office more than once.

Next is to tip the dealers well and your dealer will inform the stick info as to how the stick will/should return the dice in the combo of numbers you want will appear on top. Saves time. One hand washes the other.
