So basketball is my main sport to bet on. I love it. I usually only bet the over / under total score market.

Anyway, as much as I love this bet type in Basketball, I never ever go the unders.

Sometimes I'll take a team to win and over whatever the bookie has offered as the total offered (hd to hd / over/under), only if that team is home and like $1.30 short fav, just adds that nice value and odsa are usually like $2.20.

If favourite scores you're double happy, if dog scores, happy too, unless dog is up by 20+ late in the third, then you just hope for massive final quarter swing.

Id never do the dog and over, betting the dog is good value enough but I might take the dog to cover the spread
    and over.

Dog +14.5 and over 150.5pts. Dog scores double happy. Favourite scores, happy too. If Dog is is up by 12 late in the third, you can start rooting for the other team too.

As opposed to Dog +14.5 and under 150.5. If Dog up by 9 late in the third and it's at 120 points and dog scores a 3 on the buzzer and youre friend who knows very littls about what's going on, starts cheering coz you been cheering for Dog all game. But as he goes to high five you, you put a whole in the wall.

"Damn it couldn't you miss? Hate u dog"..

That's what you're mate is thinking... "Freddy it's not normal, just 10 minutes ago you're cheering for Dog suprisngly more so on defence than offence but anyway, now you're mad when they sink a 3? You do know that was Dog that scored right?

    Okay that was silly lol.

As opposed to backing the favourite and under. When the favourite team scores, you don't whether to cheer or not (more so the first 2-3 qtrs, unless the first qtr is really low or something), but anyway by the 4th, youll have a good idea if youre unders is safe.

The worst is when it's neck and neck in 4th, say the initial under 150.5pts and 5 mins to go it's 68 both sides, 15pts needed in 5. What do you feel or want to happen when the fav has the ball? Score or not score? Or 2 mins and 71 both sides. At some point you need the fav to just put the foot down and get it done, but when?

For those that do back the unders and either team or the spread and unders, why? And am I right in my thinking here about the awkwardness and somewhat confusing emotions experienced during the game.

    Additonal reasons for the over.

    1. Game goes to overtime. Now, while its rare, it happens quite enough to take notice of it. But say in regulat time, the total score was 130 and the over/ under was 154.5 and you had under, you might still be alright. But if it goes into double or triple overtime, bets finished, you'll need a miracle.

    2. Tight game. 1 minute left on the clock. The game goes for another 15 minutes but both teams only had 1 time out left. So what happened here? Well team A, who were down by 8 pts with a minute left, sunk a 3 and now only 5 points down, got some real confidence, so they fouled team B and on return repossession, just kept shooting and missing helpless 3s and were ove the foul limit already, so team B got fouled 5 times in the last minute, didn't miss, 13 points in a minute, when the the previous 9 was only 24 points? Yeah sorry you're not coming back from 10+ points with 20 seconds left, stop fouling already.

Another point to this is if one or even worse both teams are in foul trouble early in any quarter, you can expect a sugar ton of free throws to come in that quarter.

    3. Not so obvious but, I remember coming across an article once about why overs is better than the under. It said something like, betting on an outcome to happen is more fun than betting on it not to. Which goes back to my initial examples from the start.

I'll also add, the over could be completed early in the 4th quarter, while the under is never completed until the after the game.

On the contrary, its can also be extremely frustrating. Everyone going for hero 3 pointers and missing, team A scoring 9/24 free throws. Or missing layups with no one on you all come to mind as frustrating aspects of betting the over.

The only time I can see the under a more viable option, is when there is 23 seconds left on the clock in any quarter and they run it down to 5 seconds, and go for a ridiculous 3 pointer that's not even close. That's lost points, and better for the under.

Running the clock down in the last seconds of the game is definitely not a positive. You first have to hope it's a blowout at that point while scoring wasn't too heavy.

So 81-67, you're good, unless the losing team has possession and wanna decide to.go for a lay up or winning side has some hero that sinks a 3 when everyone is shaking hands, and it goes 151 lol.

Sorry for the long post guys, and I used European totals here or college ball as examples, as NBA is a bit harder to predict.

Under bettors, tell me your logic and when you go the unders and if you do unders and the dog to win, what strategies or when will that be viable bet?

    Thanks guys.
