    Jiri Lehecka v Holger Rune —— 8:20AM EST
    Lehecka was truly unlucky when it came to the draw, having to face Rune in the first round feels whole unjust for the young Czech player whose really shown himself well to date so far this clay season —— having managed to win a trio of matches in Belgrade, and two more in Monte Carlo, which has culminated in his world ranking climbing inside the Top 100 for the first time. It’s clear the clay surface seriously helps Lehecka’s game, as his serve is certainly not his strength, but he does cover the court very well while being an incredibly pure striker of the tennis ball on his groundstrokes.

    And the reality is; if it had not been Rune standing across the court in the first round, Lehecka would have likely been a favorite to move on —- but the draw had other plans. So instead the first round is actually setting up a truly intriguing match between a pair of young European players, both in the best form of their careers, both looking to continue on their career-high world ranking. Powered on the back of his aggressive forehand, and his improving backhand, the young Dane will look to continue a good run of form that saw him qualify in Monte Carlo, and win a challenging tour even on clay already this season. All in all, I think we see a very close match between two young kids who have shown glimpses but struggle to put it all together. As such my plays are as follows;

    Dusan Lajovic v Francis Tiafoe
    This is my single favorite play of the day, as I’m really confused as to why Tiafoe is a -170 favorite against Lajovic. Tiafoe has really struggled of late, and comes up against an opponent in Lajovic who last year managed to reach the semi-final at this event, and has proven time and time again on clay his game gives people PROBLEMS.

    The heavy forehand of Lajovic matches up very poorly against Taifoe, whose constant aggression makes for exciting tennis, but also lends itself to hitting an incredibly flat ball. That flat ball just won’t be there as often as Taifoe would like on clay, and against Lajovic, and Taifoe hasn’t illustrated the patience to pick his spots by crafting points.

    So what you should expect to see in his match-up is, Lajovic to just outlast the sporadic American who finishes with too many unforced errors to overcome.

    Play —— Lajovic ML +148
