im headed to Harrahs Saturday for my birthday

I’m not a poker player. At all

But after doing some reading I see that Jacks or better video poker has an extremely low house edge

    Pointers for a poker newbie?

Try to find a 9/6 Jacks or better machine . 9 for full house and 6 for a flush . Without getting a four of a kind you might encounter a losing session .

During a 2 days stay I usually got 7 four of a kind . Do not count on a Royal Flush . That happens seldom .

Just intrigued due to the low house edge if played properly

The key element is Perfect Play and that strategy one cannot learn over night .

Good game to fill in between table game sessions .

Video Poker in Atlantic city is A different animal that Las Vegas or Reno....be forewarned! Casino rules, regulations and actual business practices in A.C. essentially means games like 9/6 JOB does not turn out to be a 99.54% proposition at places like Harrahs A.C. Don't just take my word for it, when you actually get there ask anyone you can find (i.e. The floor bosses, the cage bosses, the slot techs/personnel etc.)....ask them "what's the payback %" on this game? Or ask them other questions like " what's the required return %, or alternatively what is the allowed hold for Atlantic city casinos"?? I'll give you a start: the general requirement for A.C. Casinos is they are allowed to "keep" as much as 83% of all revenue the house takes in...when you do your asking around I guarantee you will find people who will tell you that the supposed 99.54% game of 9/6 JOB you want to play is also, somehow, only going to give you about 83-85% back....definitely not 99.54%!

Then when your frustration, confusion and anger is boiling, call or visit the actual NJ Casino Control Commission (or NJ Gaming Commission, whichever they call themself these days.) Try and get a straight, clear consistent answer from them on this issue of question....it should be as easy and straightforward as it gets....SHOULD be....

One last thing...Harrahs and the other CET properties in A.C. have been operating all their vp and slot games via a central server since around 2014....besides myself, many of the players I know who have played there both before and after the changeover report very strange, statistically aberrant and abysmal overall play results on their video poker games. Anyway, for fun, ask any CET employee who should know "Excuse me, are your games now server based instead of individual chip based????" You're going to be surprised by how many simply have no clue or don't even understand the question!

*blows raspberry* they aren't anything great or special, bordering on the boring and sparse....I actually have not YET even frequented or played at the MGM property that's not even 15 minutes from my house, but many of my family and friends have told me all about it. When MGM opened in August 2018 they initially had only a small section of VP games with mostly 95-97% paytables. When people griped they doubled the number including ones at their bars, but it's still pretty minimal.

I essentially ceased my video poker playing in early 2016....from 2009 to mid-2015 I played once a month, mostly A.C. and occasionally Vegas, spending 4-5 days average with a average BR of discretionary funds of about 1500 for play (mostly 25 cent denom). I just finally got sick of the ever increasing lopsidedness of the games, with A.C. being particularly egregious in terms of dead games. Now, if I hardly play at all ( 2 or 3 serious sessions since Summer 2016), and if I ever decide to seriously play again it will be in Vegas only off strip!

Anyone out there with in depth detailed experience in A.C. who is familiar with their harsh rules and regs for VP players, please share....it's my current belief that AC allows casinos to manage their Video Poker like regular slots, and even if paytables on A.C. games indicate paybacks of 95-99%, in reality they return much less, like 85-90% if that....

    Da Burglar ,

Thanks for your detailed reply . Too bad things turned out that way in AC.

Maybe the downtown LV casinos are more player friendly . More locals patronage .

I visited LV several times with side trips to Laughlin NV on the Colorado River with several nice casinos.

    About 90 miles from LV.

Those machine in C as described by Da Burglar with that reduced pay back of 85 to 90 % are having the earmarks of being VLT (Video Lottery Terminals) Class 3 type machines .

Allowed by the AC Casino Control Commission is a good question that requires an answer .
