    Hello everyone,

I'm a film translator based in France and I'm currently writing English subtitles for a French film that has one scene at a roulette table.

Would any of you know how you say "Rien au numéro." in English?
It's when the ball lands on a number that no one has bet on, apparently, and I haven't been able to find the equivalent in English - except for one occurrence of "Nothing in the number," which sounds dangeroulsy close to the French.

Any help would be much welcome!
Cheers and greetings from La Rochelle.

Maybe " no winner". Actually in such a case only house wins ;-)

How about context? Is the line in the movie meant to be a funny throw out comment? Perhaps something like "the magnets win again." I like comments like "there goes the rent check." If it's a serious moment in the movie then they might consider chopping the scene in the edit room. Anyone getting taken out by one single bet result is not a serious player to begin with. Context is needed to give a good enough answer.

    Thank you for your answers.

    Indeed!
More context: Two men sit at a roulette table, only one of them is playing, as they chat.
The croupier comments throughout the scene in a very factual way. No comedic effect intended.

Then a comment about the cold hard reality of empty space is in order. I often hear "Nobody" or "Nobody there." The silent pause sells the emotion. It's hard to translate a caesura in written text.

    Jefra, Gizmotron2 and BlueAngel,

    Excellent! Many thanks!!!
Your answers give me several options and some insight on the vibe around the roulette table in such cases.
    Very helpful.
I'll try "No wins." and "Nobody there." on for size.

"Tip of the iceberg" I'll save for future use. It says more than the French, in this case.

FYI, but the film won't be released until later this year:
    Sparring
by Samuel Jouy, starring Mathieu Kassovitz, Olivia Merilahti and Souleymane M'Baye.

The casino scene comes late the film, towards the end.

    Bonne journée !

    Women? :)

What does "Clean rake." mean exactly and is that precisely how the dealer would say it?

It's a quote by the character Worm: "In the poker game of life, women are the rake man."

It's an old school term. Croupiers used to use a rake to push chips around the table to players and to drag them off for the house.

A clean rake meant the croupier dragged every chip off the table for the house.
