Perhaps with the latest onslaught of spammers - yytyrtrrrr07,yytyrtrrrr01, etc etc
there should be a better process for registering here ?
Something that would require a capcha or a reply to a confirmation email... unless those are in use already.
Just throwing out suggestions, I don't think they'll stop unless there's a way to defeat the ease that they can sign up and post spam.

Those are already in use. These spammers are getting through the captcha and confirming their e-mails and bypassing our automated spam filter, so they are most likely human spammers and not automated bots (at least for the registration process). Those are almost impossible to stop from registering. If you google "Q981497266", for example, you will see that they are spamming hundreds of forums all over the world.

Since they've been spamming us for at least 3 days straight, we've identified some of their patterns and have added them to our anti-spam algorithm. Next time they attempt to spam here, hopefully our algorithm will catch them before their posts go public.

If not, we'll continue to fine-tune our algorithm until they are automatically stopped before they can post like most spammers.

What a pain in the ass - and what do they gain from it ? Nothing.
Thanks for working on stopping it.

In the case of these Chinese spammers, it really is strange because they aren't linking to any sites or leaving any contact details, so we really don't see what they are gaining from it. Normally, to spam and sell something, the public needs to be able to contact you, either through your website or e-mail. Perhaps they are expecting people to contact them through Private Messages, but that's not possible here until you've unlocked it, so most can't even do that.

At any rate, the more they post, the more info they give us to feed our algorithm, so we'll win the arms race eventually.

Just make a newbie have 3 or 4 posts needing approval before they can free post.

This is a good suggestion. We prefer not having to limit new users to avoid spam if we can help it, but if the spammers continue to get past our automated spam filter, then we will have to implement your suggestion (at least temporarily).
