    Hi folks,

The problem of members connecting via Proxies and VPN's is not letting up and it's becoming more and more serious. For those that do not know what they are, Proxies and VPN's allow users to connect to sites via servers in various countries, thus hiding their genuine location and real IP address behind those servers.

More often than not, when we detect suspicious behavior from a member, we notice that they are hiding their real IP by connecting via a Proxy or VPN. The more we look into suspicious accounts, the more we see members connecting via Proxies and VPN's.

The problem with Proxies and VPN's is that it's impossible to ascertain who is using multiple accounts when a single person can create as many fake accounts as they want by simply creating each one via a different Proxy/VPN server.

VPN's cost just a few dollars a month and give users access to countless servers to connect through, so this is making it too easy for trolls, multiple accounts holders, and those attempting to circumvent their bans to remain undetected and have plausible deniability.

So we are proposing a new rule that would prohibit members from connecting to our site via Proxies and VPN's. Any member found connecting via a Proxy or VPN would have their account limited until they connected with their real IP. We would send them a Private Message to keep open a communication channel with them so that they can advise us when they've connected with their real IP. This is how we handled a recent incident.

The upside is we will greatly minimize trolls, multiple account holders, and those attempting to circumvent their bans.

The downside is that people living under repressive regimes who have legitimate uses for Proxies and VPN's may have difficulty participating in our community. We would also lose members who value their privacy over their participation here.

    What are your thoughts?

Whilst I have some sympathy for the use of Proxies etc AND I'm sorry for anyone in a country that doesn't allow them freedom of the Internet, in forums they are usually used to hide behind and cause disruption ... I vote we prohibit their use.

Well, I'd hate to post the obvious but considering the actual content of this supposed "gambling related" forum, I really don't think it will matter.

I believe the top threads all have to do with some other forum and all of the people who inhabit said forum. Once those people are banned from there, evidently they come over here and discuss everything and anything EXCEPT gambling related subjects.

There is a reason for the huge spread of top posters and normal members. Most normal readers will not reply in the junk threads.

So, if people wish to hide their IP, have at it. Won't make a difference in the content at all.

And to answer the inevitable reply of "don't read the threads you don't like" well that seems to work just fine for me these days.

As this thread is a new one, it's fair game!

In the name of credibility of the site, its best that rule is enforced. I vote to dis-allow VPN.

I see some people here that seem to be inserting themselves not for exchange, but for some other reason. Maybe some future interests.

its nice to have volume of people, but its better to have real people with one id for one person.

NO, I'm not using a proxy, but if I wanted to use another IP I could login at work, library, mates house, casino. Banning proxies doesn't really achieve much, plus I don't think the WoV members that pop over here should dictate how this board is run, considering how 'their fav' board is moderated. What is it that gets posted over there, "it is my house, if you don't like it, don't let the door hit your ass on the way out". Slowly they are trying to change the original intent of this forum. Leave as is.
