There is this notion in society, that if someone is offended....then the offending party has to pay. Pay with an apology, money, services. But so what if someone is offended. Note it and move on. Or dont note it and move on.

around the year 2000 I was a manager in a chain store. There was music going on ....on a 3 hour loop.....the same pre-recorded songs. Every 10 minutes a pre-recorded voice came on "manager to the monitor room". We had no "monitor room" . We had no cameras in customer access areas. It was just a device used to deter shoplifters.
However we were in a mixed area of california. Blacks, hispanics, asians, whites. However 2 or 3 times a week, a black customer would complain to management about being targeted and being offended by the practice. " as soon as I walked into this store someone saw me and called a manager to the monitor room..that is racist".
Some people escalated it to corporate headquarters....and you know what they got......they got an apology in writing and a 25 dollar gift card for being "offended". They couldnt be told that the recording was pre-recorded. They couldnt be told that we had no cameras. They were awarded compensation for being offended. And thats what they expected. And 16 years later....people have been trained that to take offense can be profitable.

People want compensation for being offended. An apology, a suspension from a message board, a gift certificate, the satisfaction of punching someone in the face and drawing blood or shooting them in the head.

I agree with Face..... people today cannot walk away from being offended. Someone flips you off on the highway...and road rage ensues for many...sometimes leading to injury or death.

Once offended, you can choose to move on or you can get angry. Anger is a secondary emotion. You only get angry if you choose to get angry.
"he made me angry".....not really. He said something that offended you...and YOU YOU YOU chose to get angry.
There is a choice involved here.

But in our PC society.....it seems people need to be compensated for being offended.

In general, my life is more like here. I cuss with the best and prefer for people to speak COMPLETELY openly, even if that includes some shit that makes me sick. But there are times, many times, when I'm not looking for the dudebro experience but want to be professional, intelligent, etc and so forth. That is hard to do when an opponent in a debate is just chucking slurs at you hand over fist.

WoV is a gem to me, in that regard. If I just wanna speak casually and be entertained / enrage by dick pics and everyone motherfucking everyone else, 99% of the internet is there for my taking. But when I wanna put on a smoking jacket and have muted conversation about obscure topics, the choices leave me wanting. Only WoV (and to an extent, DT) gives me that. And if I have to leave my shit kickers at the door to be allowed entrance, I view it as a small price to pay. I can express myself just fine without having to cunt up the place =)

Or the folks that participated in ..what is your favoirte womans body part. Or the folks that chuckle when manboy disrespects his wife and kids...as if they are some ball and chain. No, not exactly the fine cigar and caviar crowd.

Having conversations with alot of those folks(the ones that participate and encourage the threads and articles I mentioned)...would make me want to take a shower rather than put on a smoking jacket.

When it comes down to it....there really is nothing much different between wov and this site.....except the sleeziness is more pronounced over there and the vulgar language is more prevalent over here. 6 of one..half dozen of the other. Not very pronounced in the differences.

At both sites you can block the viewing of others.

At this site, you and I have had pretty lively conversation, with long well thought out posts on both sides...while at the same time WON interjects how I should fuck my grandmother, and HM interjects the witty..."no one will fuck her" retort for the 100th time. The vulgarities didnt stop our interchange at all. We were able to easily navigate through them without being offended.....and without becoming incensed ....we didnt need a monitor to protect us. WE got to say and read what we wanted in the exchange.

So what good would it have been for a monitor to delete and suspend the "go fuck your sister, and no one will fuck her(bbb)".....we didnt need a "face" to protect us.

The board never needed anyone like BBB to tell us to stop commenting on a topic as she did with EB. Really? Is this what the smoking jacket crowd needs? They need someone to tell EB to stop commenting as others engage him in conversation? A censor? Is that what the high type folks at WOV need?

An opinion censor on top of 4 or 5 people who dish out punishment on behalf of the offended or potentially offended.

Again based on your well written comment that Freddy alluded to.....I still dont see how a person with your backbone, and sensibilities would engage (for free or for pay) in something that is the antithesis of what you believe.....the belief that everyone and their brother crys foul at the drop of a hat.....when all they have to do is simply move on. The belief that all the crying empowers the person that inflicts the verbal barb, while surrendering ones power to them.

And yet you engage in that. You help put salve on the wounds of the people you detest....the people who cry foul. The salve being the suspension. The infliction of punishment to be a mommy and kiss the boo boo of crying children. Or to prevent the crying .....by suspending before the children have a chance to react.

your post that freddy referenced is well written and I agree with the content and spirit of it.

But it falls hollow when you speak of WOV being the smoking jacket crowd. Really, is it worth surrendering your ideals,is it worth backing down from your beliefs......just so you can help the so called,inappropriately named..... smoking jacket crowd?
