That pesky Harrison Narcotic Act of 1914. But even before that in 1909, the import of opium for recreational purposes was banned.

However, they persevered much like speakeasies during Prohibition and illegal gambling dens to this day, such that the last opium den was apparently raided and shut down in NYC in 1957.

So apparently if you wanted to be left free like a Libertarian to do whatever you liked to your body with drugs, you needed to live in the 19th century, V. Or move to Oregon, today (although they did roll back their decriminalization last year and make drug possession a misdemeanor again).

Yes, very true...but I DID have a "sort of" chance to smoke opium back when 'Nam was going on and GI's brought "the good stuff" back home to smoke and sell, stuff I no longer see, like Thai stick.

In college I came across opiated hashish one time: very dark with whitish flecks of opium.

No, it didn't put me into a narcotic daze or haze but it had "possibilities."

But there's networks now to bring in all sorts of drugs like heroin and cocaine: just wondering why opium is no longer popular?

Friends of mine smoked that opiated hash or maybe it was opiated (dipped in opium residue) marijuana buds years ago, one described that he kept smoking and then just suddenly passed out, I assume from the opium.

Looks like you missed out on some of the good times, V!

But be grateful. From what I understand the marijuana for some years now compared to what you smoked when you were a youngster is exponentially stronger. But ah, there's the problem and why marijuana might be more of a problem these days versus the relatively harmless weak grass those flower children smoked in the '60s.

I assume the reason not so much opium around versus heroin is the same reason it is supposedly getting harder for these junkies to find unadulterated heroin or even any heroin - has been replaced with fentanyl. Fentanyl is much stronger than heroin (about 50X stronger) and so the QUANTITIES these dope smugglers need to bring in to serve the same number of clients, is exponentially less.

Same with opium. If heroin is say 4 times stronger than morphine, morphine is in turn 10 times stronger than opium. So if you have a 40 to 1 strength ration heroin to opium, and 2000 to 1 strength ratio of fentanyl to opium, there would be no incentive to bring in those bales of opium to satisfy the users versus a proportionately smaller load of fentanyl.

It's just pure economics in the way of ease of smuggling smaller quantities to satisfy the same number of users.

Researching online, looks like fentanyl is also less expensive than heroin, so the users who are willing to take that deadly poison versus at least something that is somewhat organic, need to shell out less money per day to satisfy their habits.

I'd say that the government a hundred years ago made a mistake banning ALL drugs they probably should have looked at comparative harm, and among the opiates, allowed people to keep smoking opium but banned anything stronger for recreational use like morphine or heroin. I am 100% anti drug but if people are going to indulge anyway, at least let them have the mind altering substances that are less harmful.

Good analysis, but in the end I suspect it simply comes down to lack of demand, changing tastes in narcotics.

Were there a current demand for opium I'm sure it would be available, probably via the same networks that bring in heroin.

So hound, is it true that you've never gotten high on weed?

Just curious as it can in fact enhance things, albeit at a "cost."

It is true that I don't even drink but doesn't mean I never tried anything.

That's a sound philosophy: try many things (especially when you are young) and stick with what you like.

I never did anything outside of alcohol, but I did have an interesting experience in a car full of partiers who were smoking "black hash." You guys can explain exactly what that is to me, but the windows were up (it was winter), and the cloud from what they were smoking was so thick and viscous that the inside of the windows became coated with some tar-ish residue. They had already been smoking for awhile before I got in the vehicle, but I was impressed. Hard core stuff for the time and place.

Thanks for the info. I assume it was considered good stuff for the time. My favorite college drug story is when I friend of mine lured some ladies back to a college apartment with promises of coke. He had none, of course, but while they were in the other room, he laid out a fine line of garlic powder for them, which they proceeded to snort. And they, of course, did not inform him that his coke smelled strangely of garlic.

A college buddy of mine went to a bluegrass festival in The South and bought what he was told was hashish from some random stranger.

It seems the transaction was noticed by narcs, who then busted him...only to have to let him go when analysis showed he had a gram of horseshit.

It may not apply in a situation like that where neither party was a cop, but in cases where dealers sell for example milk sugar to an undercover who was bargaining for heroin, the prosecution for drug dealing stands.

California Health and Safety Code 11355 HS makes it a crime to arrange or offer to sell, furnish or transport a controlled substance, and then to provide a fake or imitation drug instead. In other words, it is not a defense to the charge that the item was not really a controlled substance.

Why is Wizard of Vegas dying? A lot of it has to do with Weak Wizard himself. How about the thread he started arguing which cereal shape holds more glaze? You heard that right. Yeah, that really has to do with Vegas and gambling. In his quest to bring dorkiness to new heights....the hypocrite spent Memorial Day weekend in supermarkets taking photos of cereal boxes.

Nothing creepy about a 60 year old man going up and down the aisles taking photos. He tells what's left of his cult that he spent hours on the math and disagrees with Kellogg. "Mike, if I was you, I'd write a strongly worded letter to Kellogg's" wails DJTeddyBear.

As most threads started by Weak Wizard, it came with a stupid, nonsensical poll. Upon starting the thread, the Weak One said he didn't think the thread would get much traction. Well...Duh. How's this for traction? Out of the 26,234 alleged WoV "members" ...only 7 responded to the poll. Ouch! I guess the other 26,227 were busy. Someone should start a dork of the century poll.

Josh and Zuga...what are you waiting for? Get rid of this embarrassment before you have nothing left.

Not creepy or embarrassing at all. A LOT of Customers at my job take pictures of items because they are working and that's part of their jobs. Instacart, UberEATS, and Doordash Employees have to take pictures of the items the Customers order in order for them to get paid.

More and more WoV cultists seem to be wising up. Weak Wizard just blatantly hijacked the Wordle thread trying to get someone/anyone to bump the thread in question. No takers. Boohoo. It's called Optimal size for breakfast cereal. Give it up Dork.

I have to give credit to 2 individuals I seldom, if ever, would. Both Gordo and Bob are handing it to Billy daily in his quest to find homeless to “meet”. Both are speaking the truth about most homeless making life choices to be that way and all he is doing by feeding them is making it worse.

He’s now crying about them hijacking his thread when they are doing anything but by discussing why most are homeless. And by suggesting better groups to help. But we all understand after years of living a secret life, Billy is using this as another way to meet men for his own needs.

Billy Boy....always has to one up everyone with his knows everyone, been everywhere, done everything posts. Here's one sample from the pages of WoV.

It was Thanksgiving Eve, 1980 and Billy Boy was headed home to NYC from college and decided to visit his aunt in a convent. At said convent he just happens to run into John Lennon, Yoko Ono and their son Sean. He says he spent the next 3 hours with them and Yoko kissed him on the cheek.

Yeah, sure. John Lennon and family couldn't possibly have anything better to do than hang out with this guy on the eve of a major holiday. By the way....if you look at the end of the post it has the handle 'shadroch" which Billy Boy has used on at least a couple of other forums. He posted the Lennon story from one of those forums.

Not that anyone cares but little AxelWolf got himself suspended again. This time it was in the My New Hobby thread which has nothing to do with Vegas or gambling. It's about feeding the homeless. Here's what he opined about said homeless:

"All legitimate roulette players I know of are all sodimisers [sic] who refuse ro [sic] feed the homeless" Was that Captain Morgan talking? Okay, okay English is not the little guy's first language but come on! Early dementia or just unable to form a coherent thought?

Someone messaged me that Weak Wizard has moved to Bellingham Washington. I couldn't find any mention of it on WoV but sure enough...right there on his Facebook page... it says lives in Bellingham, Washington. Yup, that's him posing in one of his stupid PI Day t-shirts.

Did Mrs. Wizard finally kick him to the curb or did she go with him? You know who was born and raised in Bellingham? None other than AxelWolf. Maybe the weak one moved there to tutor him in English.

A whole new territory to make women uncomfortable. How long before he wears out that welcome?
