“15 Minutes of Fame” - by al spath

(An Examination of a Re-occurring Dream by Donna Blevins)

Sandwiched between pocket aces and pocket kings, I sat and stared numbly at my Qs 10s. Here I was, locked in battle with the BB (KK, both red) and seat 6 (Ah, Ac), making me and my button position the main course for these two chip leaders. What was I to do, the tournament was winding down, and with only 5 players remaining and the ever-increasing blinds wiping out the three small stack players, I needed to make a final stand.

After all the pre-flop raising, I still had 15,000 to bet and knew I needed an exact flop to extend my day. The flop came: Js Ad Ks…Incredible, something for each one of us, but I didn’t know that at the time. I have an open-ended straight flush/royal flush draw, against 3 Aces and 3 Kings.

As you would have guessed, it didn’t take long for the betting to commence with the big blind wasting no time and going all in, with the aces beating big blinds money into the pot. I hesitated, but only about two seconds and I too threw in my remaining chips wishing I had an immediate re-buy option.

Tournament rules dictate that we turn over our cards since no further action could occur, so when the cards were flipped over, a gasp from the growing crowd alerted the entire room the end was near.

Fascinatingly, the turn brought the fourth king (Kc), and everyone seemed to stand up at the same moment to see what the hell the river would bring. I had but two cards left that would help me and the seat 6 (AA), now had zero. He quickly realized his only out remaining, the Ace of Spades, would give me a Royal Flush, and him second best with 4 Aces, his face changed as quickly as the hand.

He now displayed the look of a totally deflated combatant. The big blind figured he had top hand and knowing that only two cards that could beat him, he started to high five several friends and on-lookers crowded around the final table.

Incredibly, the Ace of Spades was the next card turned over and placed on the table completing my hand and relegating the four kings to third best.

The casino erupted in cheers as I leapt into the air with a Michael Jordan type takeoff. In my mind I had asked for the improbable, received the impossible and achieved instant immortality.

As I celebrated the last second victory snatched from my opponents and awaited the tournament trophy and first place money, I began to wonder:

How lucky can one person be?

How can I ever explain the euphoric feeling of being on top of the world?

Hell, what’s worse; how the heck am I ever going to top this performance?

Reality quickly set in. This was indeed my life’s quota of "15 minutes of fame" and I’d better enjoy every last second while it lasted!

    Oh Floorman

Ahhhh how sweet it is Al! This reminded me of something else...

One of the most important parts of our game is how we ask ourselves questions. Take care selecting your words.

Reframe questions so that your subconscious answers in a way that will overwrite your doubting belief system.

Most of the time you'll hear players snipe at their own game and continue to anchor bad habits:
    • Why did I play so badly?
    • Why did I call off all my chips with a losing hand?
    • Why am I always bullied at the table?
How might you change these questions to build confidence rather than reinforce poor play?

Don't know if anyone gives away a Bad Beat bonus anymore online. I know a few that would also give you 100BB of what ever limit you were playing for a royal .
