I live in Las Vegas and definitely never, ever saw even one episode of Bonanza. I heard from any number of people that it was filmed in Virginia City. That factoid did NOT make me want to see the town in any way. But I went. I've gone EVERY time we've gone up north. You'd think if you've been there once, there should be no reason to go again. Maybe, but this tourist trap is so awesome I can't help but want to see it every time we to Carson. I hope you'll give me some time to share it with you.

I've already given you some TV western history-Bonanza was filmed here. Well, I was born in New Jersey and am not a fan of westerns. I never saw the old black and white ones, but I know they are iconic. And most of the northern part of Nevada brings that period in time to life. Oh? Now, these westerns are becoming more interesting for a city girl. Virginia City is VERY touristy but the stores, bars and casinos date back to the 1800s. Yes, these are the original buildings in most cases. Lots of history from the Comstock lode, gunfights and poker. Oh, yeah, faro, miners and suicide, too.

On a site called roadsideamerica.com there is a whole page devoted to the suicide table in Virginia City. There are a lot more quirky Nevada attractions at this site as well

Carson City, the capital of Nevada, is really old, too. Several of the business that line the main street have kept their old facades all the way down to the warped wooden floors. Even old, old slot and video poker machines that only take slugs. Living gaming history that you can enjoy.

A little further down old 395 is the town of Minden. We love Minden and the Carson Valley Inn. Their poker room is in the basement. Away from noise. It's no smoking and its the best poker room I've ever played in. Two small fridges are always stocked with drinks for the players and there are always kegs for the players to self serve. Sandwiches and breakfast pastries are often available for free for the players. This poker room is very player friendly. We always stay and play here when we go up north.
