You and I are very similar RS. I think we have known that for a while. Although I am starting to take and enjoy more time off than I used to. Days of visiting the casino only to get some food are becoming more frequent an more appreciated for me.

Your use of the word "gamble" is complicating, because I don't think I gamble and I suspect you don't either. If I don't find something worthwhile, like say decent BJ conditions, I would rather record zero rounds than play what I consider sub-par. And I have that luxury, as do you.

I was reading Mr Zee's post today, on Normy's forum about traveling 3 hours to a casino to play. Traveling 3 hours along with expense involved means you are going to play, whatever is available....lousy penetration blackjack....lousy pay-table video poker...other opportunities that you would otherwise consider subpar. You aren't going to drive 3 hours....spending time and gas and say "there is nothing worthwhile here" and drive home.

Not to pick on Zee, but I have to question whether anyone that puts themselves in that situation is really an AP or just fooling themselves.

Since moving to Vegas last month, I've been in a casino almost everyday. Just getting me feel for it after rarely coming for the last few years.
Eventually, my plan is for 15-20 hours a week of video poker and a bit less blackjack.

Welcome to both GamblingForums and Vegas shadroch

Assuming you are the "shadroch" from the old BJinfo, long time no see. Asked about you a couple times to a couple of people who I thought might know you.

About a year ago, after having lived in Vegas for 6 years, I finally got around to road-tripping the state and exploring some of the small out of way places and thought of you as that was always your specialty. You seemed to know all the off-the-beaten-track places that time and everyone else forgot. ;) The trip was enjoyable from an educational and historical perspective but not really very beneficial financially for me. Not much hope of getting anything other than nickel BJ pay down at most places. But never the less enjoyable.

I know you are no stranger to Vegas, but I would like to share some info privately concerning low limit BJ play (assuming you are still at fairly low limit, supplementing your retirement stakes) and VP play/mailer info that you may find useful, if you are interested.

This story goes back to 1987. Long before I was any kind of professional gambler. I was rubber tramping. That's a tramp who lives out of a car. I didn't know anything about the gambling and was just a poor day laborer. I was working day labor in Reno and got tired of pissing off my wages to the casinos. I loaded my ass up in my car and proceeded to lose that town with what wages I still had on me. But, while driving away, I seen a bar on East 4th Street called the Rumpus Room. I pulled over to have a beer.

I get up in that bar and proceed to run my mouth. I have the attention of all the boys in the bar. They start asking me questions. Where you from? What the hell are you doing here? I had seen it all before so I'm in no humor with these assholes. I lied like hell to them. I told them that I was from Key West, Florida. They asked me why I left Key West to come to Reno. I told them:

"Too many queers in Key West."

The bartender gave me a dirty look and said "Sir, do you know what kind of establishment you are in?"

That's when I looked around at all the boys in the joint who were staring back at me for my remark. I thought to myself "Mickey, you dumb son of a bitch. You should have been able to figure it out there on the street when you seen the name of the bar was the Rumpus Room." I was surrounded by gayboys.

Now, mind you, I ain't chickenshit about nothing. So there was no way I was going to jump up out of my seat and go running for the door. I sat there and had a gay (pardon the pun) old righteous good time with them gayboys. I got hit on a time or two but told them I was "queer for pussy."

A few hours later they all hugged me when I left.

I actually gamble on a casino.
I visit my nearest casino 3-4 times per month on average, each visit lasting more than 8 hours.
Near new year and summer I visit more often.

I'm glad to see this thread finally heading on it's intended subject matter.

This past weekend I was in a casino both Saturday & Sunday each day 4 hours. Saturday I got 4 Aces with the kicker $2 grand, also had a few other 4 of a kinds. Sunday wasn't as good, I dropped $1,2000 overall a winning weekend. But I don't like giving any profits back.

    kewl,
I appreciate your offer but prefer to lone wolf it for the present.
There is entirely too much bochincha on most of these boards for my liking, and not nearly enough gambling discussions.
Let's give it a bit and see if I stick around before trying to put the band back together.

I'm too a frequent casino player, although I gamble only on my business trips. Once or twice per month I'm flying to Montevideo for 3-4 days on business and every day, at least for 4 hours, I'm gamble on my favourite european roulette :p

My offer was only about providing some info via PM or email, that you might find beneficial. Things like what coin-in amount generates what mail offers at different stores. Nothing that would effect your "lone wolf" play, nor did I expect any info back in exchange. But that's ok, I respect you view. Still want to welcome you to Vegas and wish you well.

Good golly...I learn something new every time Mickey posts. Rubber tramping....a tramp who lives out of a car. Who knew. :)
Just out of curiosity, where did such a person get his mail? Things like an address for registration of said car/home?

What I would really like to see and I know many others would enjoy is Mickey to be published. Perhaps a composite of short stories of the life and times. Maybe something called "travels of Mickey Crimm".

Evidently, I can't send or receive private messages until I log a lot more posts here.

i second this! mickey, you should create a thread with your short stories, maybe in rough chronological order. i would read the shit out of it as your writings and experiences are always fascinating!

admins can correct me if i'm wrong, but i think anyone can receive private messages. what requires a higher post count is sending them.

If that's the case, I'll happily accept any advice kewJl or anyone cares to send.
I've been mostly hitting the 50 or 55 age benefits.- Stations has some good deals in that aspect. Half price dining, free slot tournaments.
I'm priming up to get serious.

i think kewlj has a way to go before he can send pm's. he's only got around 115 posts, although he posts some really juicy stuff. he's one of the highest quality posters i've seen here, and that's coming from someone who's been here since the beginning.

Well we can openly discuss some of those 50/55+ type benefits. Nothing top secret about those. What I was thinking of sharing is some coin in amounts that will generate mail offers from some of the specific local type properties. That I don't want to do publicly.

Stations already mentioned: 1/2 point dining buffet and café on Wednesdays. The buffet lines are long if you are not chairman or presidential and can cut to the short line. Lines are shorter at the Fiesta (also station) properties, like Fiesta Henderson and the buffet is very much on par with station. A nice little buffet.

Boyd (sams' town, gold coast, Orleans, suncoast): 50+ Wednesday earn 5pts get 1/2 prices buffet, earn 50 points get free breakfast/lunch buffet, 100 pts free dinner. 50 pts is $50 played through on video poker. That is negative EV of a couple pennies.

East Cannery has a half price senior day paying with points. I think it is Mondays and Tuesdays and the East cannery Buffet is one of my favorites. maybe a hair below stations. Great desert station.

Silver7 (formally terribles) has a senior day, I think half price buffet, but there buffet sucks. One of the worst in Vegas.

Silverton and south point both have a senior discount day but there buffets are overpriced in my opinion, so even at half price you are getting about regular value (IMO)

Tuscany has a 2 for 1 senior day (thurs) at the café (forget the name). They also have really yummy all you can eat pancakes for $4, from midnight til 6am if you happen to be out late. Some of the tastiest pancakes I've ever had.

And the best discount in Vegas that comes to mind isn't even a senior discount, it is a local's discount. Westgate (formerly, Hilton). There buffet has premium pricing, meaning way overpriced like most strip properties. $18ish for breakfast, $25ish for dinner, sunday brunch even a little more. BUT, for locals playing with points $2 breakfast (M-TH), $5 dinner Sun-Th), $7 sunday brunch. You do need to either call first or check the convention schedule because the buffet is closed some weekdays when not much is happening at Westgate or if nothing big is at LV convention center next door.

And if you need to ride the monorail to get there.....$1 monorail for locals with ID.

Boyd and stations both have $4 movie days for seniors (afternoon showings)

I'm living on the East Side so I've been hitting Boulder Highway,Sunset Station and Fiesta Henderson.
I'd like to fill my card with a free buffet most days, half price if necessary.
    Does Westgate have playable VP?
I hit Barleys a couple times on Wednesday. They give a bottle of liquor for $100 run thru. Then hit Sunset for a free Starbucks and a $4 movie.
Got four bottles at a cost of $16. That will do me for a year.
    Thanks for the heads ups.

I go to casinos a hell of a lot more often than I go to church.

    What price salvation?

Isn't a casino just as "holy" a place as a church?? There certainly is more "praying" going on. :D

I've been looking for something to volunteer for.
I've got it narrowed down a bit.
One of the opportunities involves working with a small group that is non-denominational and works with various churches in the valley.
It seems that many tourists visit these church's each week and many drop a chip or two in the collection baskets.
This Order collects the chips , cashs them and sees the money is distributed properly.
I just might become a Chip Monk.

Wow....that was some work to get to that punchline....but ok. Pretty funny.

Related though is that the casino industry now claims that is an illegal use of casino chips. It wasn't Nevada, but as part of a case (current lawsuit) against Valley Forge Casino. The casino initially refused to cash a young card counter's chips saying that he couldn't prove the chips were from actual play an it is not legal for them to have come from anywhere else, including payment of debt. By that definition, even using a chip to tip the cocktail waitress is not a legal use of the chip and that has been going on since the invention of time.

I was drinking in a bar over in Billings one time with a guard who worked at the Women's state penitentiary. He told me that a third of the women were in for gambling related offenses like bad checks and embezzlement.
