A true story from the life of Frank & JoAnna Kneeland 1925-2001

My mother and I had many intellectual discussions over the years. Most of them I lost. There was a reason for this. Unbeknownst to me my mother had studied Socratic argument, syllogism, and been champion of her debate team. Only late in life when I finally got around to studying Plato’s Republic would I come to realize this. Despite the audio book being narrated by a man with a deep tenor, I could only hear my mother’s voice speaking the words of Socrates to me from beyond the grave.

This story is about one of the very few times I did win an argument with her. It also contains a lesson I believe could benefit almost everyone, especially in today’s world where misinformation abounds.

It will require a little back story and setting of the scene.

My mother was quite religious, though not always the same religion. After leaving the Catholic Church at age fourteen she studied eleven of the top faiths of the world. I can’t list them all here, but I know they included: Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and other derivations of Christianity. She even got to study the Hindu with the man himself, Gandhi. She eventually settled on the Jehovah’s Witness faith and remained in it until she passed in 2001.

The year was 1991 and one of her fellow Kingdom Hall partitioners had spotted her “gambling” in a casino and reported it to the elders. The irony of course was that she wasn’t gambling, she was working for a wage. During this period, she, and I both worked for the largest slot team in Las Vegas and were getting paid a large salary to play progressive slots and video poker. That reality was of course beyond the know of the person that reported her. Gambling is strictly against JW code. She was called in for an elders meeting.

I believe the way these things are supposed to go is the elders corner a congregation member they know to be acting outside of established parameters, chastise them, get apologies, and assurances that it won’t happen again. Remember, this was my mother, I almost feel sorry for the poor elders. They never knew what hit them.

After thirty minutes of arguing on the meaning of the word “gambling” with my mother citing the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic definitions of the word, the only way to describe the look on their faces was hopeless. They knew they were out of their depth. She referred them to a Bethel Elder, Brother Enrico Marini. He was a bible scholar who had helped translate the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (The JW Bible). He was also our family’s close friend. He had stayed with us in Florida, and we had flown him and his wife to Rome and London to see firsthand the oldest fragments of the bible. We even pulled strings and got him access to the Codex Vaticanus.

They ended the meeting and simply said they would get back to her after doing more research. They did not. The matter was closed. (Mother 1—Elders 0)

Even after having witnessed the utter abject defeat of the elders, I decided to take up the debate while driving my mother home. No, I was not a glutton for punishment. I knew things they did not. I had only been listening during the entire escapade and I thought I might have an angle no one had considered, Epistemic Responsibility.

My tack was that while wagering money on a game of chance was one definition of gambling, it was not the only one. It was also possible to “gamble” on information and the word of another. I knew my mother had done this, as she had made the mistake (from a syllogistic perspective) of listening to me.

I opened the debate by reminding her that she didn’t always play for a fixed wage, sometimes we played positive expectation VP on our own. She responded with the “positive expectation gambling isn’t gambling any more than investing in a business opportunity that should succeed.” I knew I had her.

I said, “But if you can’t do the math yourself you are relying on trust which is a form of gambling. You are gambling on the accuracy of what you are being told by someone else. How can you be sure the information is correct?” Now I double knew I had her.

She said, “Because you are the one that told me. I trust you and I know you’d never lie to me!”

Frank comes in for the Coup de grâce, “Lie no, but have I always been right about everything for as long as you’ve known me?”

Her only reply was, “crap” though she did say it in French, “merde”.

My goal here was not to prove my mother wrong. I was still religious myself at this time. I wanted her to have a clean slate with Jehovah. In my mind what she was doing was gambling unless she could do the math herself. Resting on your own laurels is fine. Technically, one is not supposed to rest on the laurels of others. Laurels are not transferable.

I spent a day showing her how to make VP strategies, and once she showed me that she had it solidly down the matter was put to bed.

Years later when I wrote my book on progressive VP, I would incorporate this methodology into the writing. I provided very few strategies in the book and instead focused on the math people needed to learn to create strategies on their own. It hurt my sales and generated a fair amount of customer complaint. People wanted me to do it for them, not show them how to do it themselves.

I stand by my decision and would not do anything differently, even if given the choice.

The lesson I am trying to impart here is this: All this offering of baccarat strategies, counter arguments, confirmations, debunking’s, etc… is bearing no fruit. Let’s talk less about the strategies and more about the methodological principles used to create the strategies.

The best example I can think of to illustrate what I’m saying is this: You cannot get anyone to agree unanimously on a political candidate. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! You can get people to agree on the fact they’d rather have someone that’s honest over someone that lies. More education over less education. More experience vs. less experience. Etc…

If we can’t agree on conclusions, perhaps we might (tiny might) be able to agree on what we use to come to our conclusions.
