Possible New Lead in Decades Old Double Homicide Gives Hope to Family

A possible new lead in a decades old double homicide is giving hope to a grieving family still dealing with the tragic loss.

Marilyn Putt and Julie Schossow disappeared from a Harrah's Hotel bar in South Lake Tahoe on January 12, 1982.

"They were last seen leaving there with some gentlemen, appeared to be friendly," said Investigator Dave Stevenson with the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office.

That's the last time the two blackjack dealers who worked at the casino were seen alive. In the summer of that same year, their naked bodies were found bound in chains in the South Fork American River at Chili Bar Park, 65 miles from Tahoe.

"This has been a nightmare for 34 years," said Marilyn's sister Dana Dearing.

Decades later and still no word on who killed the two friends, but the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office cold case task force won't rest until they figure it out.

With the help of social media videos the team creates and posts, they recently got new leads. Investigators want to talk to anyone involved with Tahoe's Church of Scientology in the 1970s and 1980s.

"We know they had friends associated with the church," said Stevenson.

They're also looking to interview people who worked at Harrah's where the two victims worked or lived near them on Los Angeles and Bellevue Avenues.

While the victims families continue waiting for a break in the case, Dana Dearing and Marilyn's son Jason just want to put the nightmare to bed.

"It would be so important just to give family closure just for us to finally know what really happened," said Dearing.
