Lounge Ken's awesome movie ratings !!

I was just watching re-runs of johnny Carson show that they show daily......and Rich Little was on. The thing I realized, is that every actor he impersonated, would not be recognized by most people in their 30's or younger.
John Wayne, Bogart. Stewart, Cagney, Peter Lore. Louis Armstrong, Burt Lancaster, Heston.....

When I was a kid, I would watch regular tv(there was no cable)......and think to myself....the people in these movies....even the minor actors ...will live forever, because these movies will always be shown over and over on these stations.(we only had 6-7 stations)

But with cable, and people not being interested in black and white movies.......I was wrong. These stars, and almost stars of the B movies that I used to watch.......are gone....unless you are taking a film class in college. No one will remember them like I thought. There work is rather disposable.

even classic comedy like Marx brothers movies..from over 80 years ago are dead to the world..
Growing up watching old movies to me were Marx brothers, Laureland Hardy. Abbot and Costello, Bowery Boys. ....were played every sunday on local movie channel. Those are all but dead to the world. They are what silent films were to me.

 

Hey Ken - spent almost my entire life NOT watching movies (when avoidable) just for personal reasons.
Then recently (last 5-6 years or so have started watching EVERYTHING). It's interesting because all
the movies that everyone else had seen, I hadn't. Now I have some that I've put in my top 10 without
a doubt and some I have even watched 20+ times. (I own them - can't stand theaters).
I read your reviews - don't agree with some of them, but that's how it's supposed to be.
What's your top 10 and top 5 perhaps ?
I'm always taking suggestions on what to watch - some friends would tell me "You HAVE to see this one"
and it's usually 50/50 if I end up liking it or not lol. Some suggestions are usually non-mainstream or ones
other people haven't heard of either. But regardless - what's your top list if you have the time to
jot it down.

This weekend saw "The Passion of the Christ" for the first time and "Spy Game".
Liked them both, even though at least one of them was based on complete fiction. Laughs.
Tonight I think I'll watch Monty Python's Life of Brian - just to have a few laughs again and keep
the religious roll going.

I loved both of those. Spy Game type of films are MY THING....great movie (imo of course).

What do you usually enjoy?

Drama, comedy, action, sci-fi?

Anything but comedy.
That's only because so many times someone has said "This movie is sooooo funny, you have to see it" and
I never laughed once, nor smiled.
I think my sense of humor isn't compatible with most movie-goers.
For funny - One of my favorites was "Don't be a menace to South Central while drinking your juice in the hood"
and was such a laugh because I have seen all of the movies mentioned in the title and this comedy was
actually a comedy.
So I tend to avoid comedy, romantic movies, ie. chick flicks. More action/suspense/some sci-fi etc. I can
deal with but I'll turn something off after 15 minutes if I'm not feeling it.
I also don't like politically motivated movies - those ones where you're being entertained and not even
realize the whole time that you're being preached to. ie. Avatar.

I wanted to see Hacksaw Ridge but like you I dont like political bias.
