Sports Betting Better Lotto Than Soccer Pools (1X2)

Moving to Europe, I thought I would pay a lot of attention to soccer pools — the famous 1, X, 2. Not so fast! I am disappointed with the payouts. It makes this type of gambling worse than lotto.

The house edge in soccer pools is worse than in regular lotto games. In other words, the player disadvantage is way higher.

Let’s take an easier lotto game: 5 from 40. The odds to win the jackpot: 1 in 658008. The jackpot can reach 100000 euros.

Let’s take a game like totocalcio with 14 matches. The odds to win 14 of 14: 1 in 4782969. I take as an example the results in Italy, contest 25/2019. The jackpot is not high enough for the odds: 65000 euro. Pound for pound, it should have been in the neighborhood of 700000 euro to match lotto 5/40!

The explanation for this gambling paradox: The number of ‘1X2’ players will never match the number of lotto players.

I was so passionate about this type of gambling! Yes, there is more to it than simply random. Some matches are more predictable. But there are always big surprises, the matches that everybody thought of as forgone conclusion. That’s why I would expect far better payouts.
