If you have multiple degress for example and choose to dig ditches for a living..... you are not a professional.
Mark Cuban is not a professional. He is an businessman, and entrepreneur, an owner, ...but I cant think of a "profession" that he could be a part of.
You are an employer, and a businessman, and a skilled tradesman.

You can call a woman that works for you...a fucking cunt.....and there is no one who will strip you of the title AP. You can rape a woman that works for you...and when you get out of jail......there is no one who can strip you of the title AP....You have no professional standard governing you, no professional oversight..therefore you are not in a profession.

In real professions...there are consequences for abhorrent behavior. In self proclaimed professions....anything goes...and you will never...ever...lose your title. You can shoot up a school of children...and you can still call yourself an active professional AP once you get out of jail in 300 years. Heck you can call yourself a professional AP in jail....as you find advantage ways to win cigarettes or commissary money

I am consistent, and nothing that even approaches being a hypocrite ...very consistent

professionals dont just pass a simple background check and pay for a license....that would be along the lines of a hair cutter.,,who has to take no exam, or show proof of ability to cut hair.... and just sends a check,,does not have to prove any ability to cut hair. Tatoo artists as well.
Great creative tradesmen.......does things the average person cannot do.
But any convicted rapist, heroine addict, child molester can be a tradesman in most fields. Most trades have no entry conditions to meet....nor do they have ongoing standards to meet.

you are reaching with the hypocrite moniker.

now all you have to do is buy "So you Wanna Be a Gambler:Roulette" . Declare yourself a Patrickonian "professional gambler".....combined with being a professional psychic,...and you will clean up.

Imagine being in 2 professions.....2 disciplines .....a very rare feat

once you learn that "trends dominate" and "predetermine what your bets will be BEFORE entering the casino" and "3 losses in a row....you must go"....and combine that with your professional psychic ability......no casino will be safe from the carnage you inflict.

you will soon have a bond fund as large as stanton's

In my state, to cut hair and to do a tattoo, you must go to school and become state certified and licensed.

I feel like you're really cherry picking what is and what is not a profession, simply because you CHOOSE not to believe someone is or is not a professional on the grounds of liking or distaste alone. Not all professionals are as "white collared" as you make them out to be, Larry.

Lets look at something real quick, specifically section 2 under adjective.

As we can see here, Axel and I are both right about being "Professional" in that the adjective (a word or phrase naming an attribute, added to or grammatically related to a noun to modify or describe it) describes what we do. Especially the part "(of a person) engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime.". That's exactly what Axel and I do.

Nothing, anywhere, has made a case for "Professional" only accounting for those who have to adhere to a structured set forth by some type of committee, board, or oversight.

What it sounds like, to me, though, is that you are indeed a "professional" Larry, and you detest the fact that we CAN use the world, justifiably, and you feel like you and all other white collar workers have some kind of monopoly on this.

Am I close? I Feel like I'm close here.

    Judges ruling? Nailed it.

Your personal opinion doesn't take away from the fact that Axel and I might, in fact, be considered professionals at what we do, even claim that we are, in fact, professionals at what we do. Hell, even Mickey can make that claim because he is, in fact, a professional based on those guidelines laid forth by the definition. Which actually gets back to the "consummate" part of the argument with MrV, because even that, as defined by the following.

    Specifically #2.

Looks like not only are Axel, Mickey, and I professionals by definition, but Axel and myself could even claim to be consummate professionals simply by our level of skill and knowledge.

I rest my case, gentlemen, I'm sure you'll have interesting arguments to make after I've posted this. Give me some leniency however, I leave tonight and don't expect to return until Monday/Tuesday.

I can call you a real DICK and then run to the dictionary and point out that its slang for detective...and in your line of work you have to be a sleuth in one manner or another.
But the reality of the real world is not defined by a singular dictionary definition that one chooses.

For some poorly educated folks.....awesome, amazing are descriptors that become meaningless from overuse. Just as the word "like".

And there are folks who self proclaim themselves to be "professionals" using a definition that makes the word meaningless...where a 18 year old cashier at walmart can call herself a "professional checker".......and her husband can brag that he is married to a "professional". THAT is the dictionary world that axehole lives in. A world where words are meaningless. A world where titles are self anointed.
A world where kids play sports where everyone gets a trophy by parents who are all self proclaimed "professionals".

It doesnt matter to me. It doesnt cost me a penny if some cocaine addicted felon calls himself a professional gambler...or a professional stockboy, or a professional house sitter or dog walker, or flyer distributor . There is no one to take that moniker away from them. Hell..they can print themselves a certificate stating such....and there is no law that can say they are lying. There is no one to revoke their "professional" status if they behave poorly or commit felonies. .....which makes their moniker MEANINGLESS. Just as your self appointed moniker as professional is meaningless.

Real professionals can actually provide proof that they are such. They can provide documentation. They just cant declare it when seeking employment.

What the fuck does an AP have to prove he is a professional. What? A tax form that shows income? Therefore anyone who earns income is a professional? Yeah right. Its just a fucking declaration by people who arent professionals to make them feel better about their lot in life....gives them something to brag about..
Thats ok with me. Like I said it doesnt cost me a dime if a guy living in a cardboard box on the side of the road calls himself a professional beggar.

If he makes enough money to live from doing that....and he knows the best places to beg, and he knows the right people to approach, and he knows the right words to say.....he has expertise in begging and living on the street....then he is a professional homeless person.
And any father would be happy that his daughter would be marrying a professional.

No Larry I didn't just go to some urban dictionary, I pointed out historical references, literature,TV, Radio , books, magazines, media, the original and current meaning of the word. A supreme court ruling, requirements of the IRS (there's even special forms). There's many thousands of references. Very few can actually make a living doing it. There's special knowledge, higher difficulty, higher levels of income and there's multiple things to learn and perfect.

Professional usually doesn't include minimum wage jobs or people that are at entry level jobs, especially ones that take a week of training. I wouldn't call a sports runner a professional gambler or someone who works for an AP.

You would have a hard time arguing there such things as a professional writers, singers, musicians artists etc. Even in the most strict meaning of the word it would allow for caveats.

I don't disagree that there's different categories of professionals you're talking about licensed professionals that service the public.

very few people can make a "good" living begging on the streets. But there are those with expertise of where, and how to go about it.
and "good living" is rather subjective.
There are people coming here from other countries making minimum wage, and in their eyes they are making a "good living"

Imagine the anointing of the word "professional" has attached to it the floating definition of "good living". Real professions dont have monetary assignments attached to the word. A pharmacist can open a pharmacy and not become profitable for 3 years. He is still a professional...even though he isnt making a"good living". He may never become profitable based on changing neighborhoods, riots, insurance company freeze-outs.....but he is still a professional.

"good living" is not the decider of whether someone is a "professional".

There are people that sell amway door to door that make a "good living"....they are not professionals...although you might find a dictionary that says they are. But if amway salepeople are professionals ...then everyone on earth is a professional in their occupation.
    Rather meaningless.
If you can call yourself a professional simply because you make a "good living": and enjoy some expetise in your field.....then every fucking person who gets a paycheck can claim they are making a "good living" and that they need to exhibit some expertise in doing their job.

I could not walk up to a walmart cash register and just start ringing up people. I would have to be trained on it first and gain some expertise, on logging in, entering bar codes that wont scan, entering items without a bar code, weighing produce, accepting food stamps,. So the 17 year old cashier gains that expertise.....and is now a "professional"....and for her 400 dollars a week is a "good living".

There are people whowalk around town going through garbage cans and dumpsters collecting plastic and aluminum. Atthe end of the day they make a "good living". Who are you to say they dont make a good living. Each person decides what a good living is.

Therefore each person decides what a profession is .....based on income. Joe blows income is not big enough to qualify......by who's standards.

thats the rabbit hole you fall in when you dont have a clear reason to call yourself a professional...other than you have some expertise and make a "good living".......yeah,,, YOU AND 200 million others in this country alone.

every single person who does work at something other than what I do, ...does something I cant do without some training at least...and even with training I might not be able to do it. They have expertise I dont have.

And because of that.....they are all professionals

    awesome, amazing, ........like cool

Larry, I don't know why you are so obsessed with this topic? Boy, you get on a topic and stay on it forever, going over and over the same arguments.

The term "professional" seems pretty straight forward to me. Oxford says: (of a person) engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime. So what is the problem? If one makes all or most of their income from said activity...then they are a professional at said activity. What you seem to want to do is insert some sort of morality clause or higher standard of what said activity can be. Failing that, you seem to want to set a new standard eliminating any activity where there is the possibility of bad characters (you constantly bring up child molesters and drug addicts). News Flash Larry: There are bad apples, bad characters associated with every line of work, or money making enterprise, whether they are regulated or not. In short, yes there are bad people in life, in all aspects of life and that includes your beloved nursing.

So, the definition is already there. No need to re-write it. And yes that means the squeegee guy washing car windshields at the red light, just might be a professional squeegee guy....so what?

Now if you are hell bent on arguing definitions or labels, here is one that bothers me just a bit. In my profession (yes profession), of AP, I know of three different people that call themselves "professional APs" and am bothered by that label.

One is retired from a previous teaching career and has significant retirement income. While currently, and for the last 20 years since his retirement, he has earned money as an AP and being that is his only current earnings, he qualifies as a "professional AP" under the oxford definition. But is he really? Without his retirement income, he would not be able to live as he does and has for the past 20 years.

Number 2, similar situation. He ran some sort of family business for most of his life and a few years ago sold the family business for a substantial amount of money and now fills his time APing.

Number 3, receives monthly social security benefits and spends his time APing. His AP income is indeed more than his social security. Is he a professional AP?

While all three of these guys fall under the technical definition (oxford), I would say it is a quasi situation at best. Kind of stretching the definition. I believe #1 and #3 are supplementing their retirement (which is a great use of AP), while #2 is engaged in a profitable hobby like activity. But I don't believe any of these three are professional AP's. To me a professional AP is someone living off his/her AP income. And if that AP income were to suddenly stop, they would need to find another source of income (unless they had acquired enough wealth to retire).

then the word is meaningless....because everyone that makes money is a professional. Very good.

so when someone tells you their daughter married a professional...it means shit,....because the person is using your vision of the word professional...meaning anyone not on welfare.

Fine,,,,LIKE i said....it doesnt cost me a penney if you or squeegie people call themselves professionals.....like I said before...it give me a good laugh.

And who the fuck are you to be the arbiter of how many responses are too many. All my posts on the topic are responses to others who engage me. And its a lively exchange.

But in the end....yes....anyone and everyone can call themselves a professional gambler, cake decorator, ditch digger...........but not everyone can call themselves a registered pharmacist, lawyer, credentialed teacher, professor, physician, doctor, policeman, fireman, engineer ...you know the real professions. Because in real professions you cannot just declare yourself a member. In real professions...its a crime to pretend to be in and practicewithout proper credentials.

But in the make believe squeegie men professions.....declaring yourself a member is just fine.

Rachel Dolezal pretended to be black as a high ranking worker in the Naacp.......her response that she lied amounted to....well we all originated in africa so we are all black...so I put that down on job applications. Although she couldnt point to one specific ancestor that was black. According to her EVERYONE is black and can check off that box on a job application if it suits their need. She just declared herself "black" just like people that amuse me declare themselves to be "professionals"

And according to you everyone is a professional to the point where its just as meaningless as "everyone is black"

People like you and her amuse me.

Daughter in the neighborhood where you live:Hey dad, I want to bring my boyfriend over to meet you and mom...he is a professional, so make a good impression when he gets here......

Father: what does he do for a living

Daughter: he is a professional squeegie man on the corner of center street and Main street. He just got out of jail so he will appreciate moms home cooking

Father: you fucking cunt....I thought you were educated in the english language.......squeegie men arent professionals......so fuck off and bring home a real professional.

Larry is a miserable person. It stems from his compulsive gambling. He detests winning gamblers so has to come with anything he can to put them down. I mean, this is a forum for gamblers and all Larry does is run them down, that is, unless you are a loser like him. He really needs to get a life.

I think LarryS is simply jealous of APs who can make a decent living doing something they enjoy while he has to work at a job he hates. AP is something LarryS would love to do, but can't figure it out on his own. You know he sure as hell tries and even pretends to do. It's ok, Little Larry, you can let the big boys gamble while you be a nurse. We'll all be just fine.

Resenting AP's because he can't cut it as one is certainly the way he comes across. Shades of Eliot. o_O

Remember the scene in Caddyshack where Judge Smells tells the kid the world needs ditchdiggers too? (link below). Well the world need ball-washers too. :D

actually for me I couldnt imagine going to work and doing a job that doesnt help people. I always enjoyed doing that. I am only in this world a short period, and live for helping people and getting paid for it. Its fulfilling to the point where I currently also do pro bono work 6 days a year, approx every second month. I have worked with AARP and private institutions.
So no I couldnt imagine spending my life doing what full time gamblers do. I do not begrudge them making a living if thats how they want to make a living. Its just not for me, and certainly not something I envy or dream about.

Just because I point out that full time gamblers and corner squeegie men are not "professionals" doesnt mean I am jealous of them or dislike them.
All I have said all along is that if gamblers and squeegiemen want to proclaim they are "professionals"....go right ahead.....and I can continue to laugh at those that do. Its a free country...you can call yourself anything you want within the law. And there is no law against gamblers and squeegiemen from giving themselves an elevating title. If it makes you feel good....go ahead.

Your ability to connect the dots is faulty....your logic is flawed.

You say that now, but your frequent jabs and condescending comments indicate otherwise. Maybe you aren't even aware of it.

Pro boner work? Is this something that 'springs up' as result of your ball-washing skills? :D

Joking aside (above), I applaud you for this Larry. This...what a person does with their time and money is the measure of the quality of a person, much more than how they earn that money (excluding illegal activities).

when you are defeated in a debate, all that is left to do is attack the challenger personally.....you dont like me, you dont like gamblers, you are unhappy, you are jealous of me...blah blah blah.
Nope...its none of that...I simply put forth a compelling argument...to prompt a viewer to post "game, set, match".

You end up commenting about erect male genitalia as a final response. OK you win.....well played. You kept your best for last.

other than debating the issue of professions over the last week or so.....please do tell of my frequent jabs against people who gamble.
they must be easy to pick out as they are numerous according to you
