The Trump administration has also said that it plans on imposing a special 20% "border adjustment" tax on all imports from Mexico in order to rake in the necessary cash. The problem with this ingenious new strategy is that it wouldn't make Mexico pay a dime. Since the tax would be charged on sales made in the U.S., it would be the U,S, consumer, not the Mexican government or even Mexican businesses, who would be footing the bill.

But the larger problem is that such strategies would inevitably set off a commercial war with Mexico that would have serious negative collateral effects on the American economy. Mexico is the United States third largest trading partner, selling $236 billion a year to its southern neighbor. In addition, over 25 million U.S. citizens travel to Mexico as tourists each year without having to pay a dime for their visas. If Mexico responded to Trump in kind by slapping on its own taxes, tariffs and fees on travel — which it certainly would — goods and services from the United States, Mexico could easily match, and thereby effectively take back, the money collected by Trump through his own measures.

From what I have read, the majority of folks working in the kitchens of restaurants in NYC and other major cities are illegals from south of the border.

For the most part (yeah, there are always exceptions) American workers are unwilling to do demanding hard, physical labor anymore, especially the kids here in Portland and its suburbs, where I live.

Don't know how things are in the farm country, where some grow up doing hard work, but there aren't enough there to fill the void, and kids leaving the farm go to the cities to avoid hard labor, to get "a better job."

It's always been thus in America, there's always been a class of people to do the work nobody else would do.
